Sayings

What adages, mottoes, or phrases of advice were common in your family when you were growing up? (e.g., "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." "No use crying over spilled milk." "Do what I say, not what I do.") Write about a specific incident when the phrase was used.Do those words still have any power over you?

I think one of the sayings I heard the most was "because I told you to that's why". I must have asked why I had to do something & in the end the response was always that. Funny thing is that now I find myself saying the same thing back to my boys.

Another one that I heard a lot was "don't keep that look on your face otherwise it will be there for good when the wind changes."

I am sure there were a lot more that were said but I can't remember them. I normally don't remember them until all of a sudden they are coming out of my mouth & then it is instant flashback.

One saying that I remember but it is not really from my childhood, rather from a few years ago is "God never gives us more than we can handle." Granny told me that & it has been a source of comfort on those long sleepless nights in the last few years. Those are really the words that have power now, as does "what goes around, comes around."

lol Maybe we had the same parents because I sure heard that "because I said so" pretty often!
